Pendant l’Occupation, Madeleine Perret, née Richard, qui vivait à Paris, faisait de la Résistance. Elle fit la connaissance de Bernard Levando qui, en février 1942, lui demanda de l’aider à sauver les jeunes enfants de sa cousine Rachel Szonek en leur trouvant un abri hors de la capitale. Mission accomplie, et bientôt Bernard Levando accompagna les deux enfants, à bord d’un train de marchandises, à Passay La Conception (Orne) où habitaient les parents de Madeleine, Gustave et Lucienne Richard, qui avaient accepté d’accueillir Maxime, quatre ans. Une voisine, Maria Olivier, prit en pension Pierrette Szonek, sept ans, sans savoir qu’elle était juive. Madeleine trouva également des familles d’accueil à Passay pour plusieurs autres enfants juifs de Paris, ainsi que pour des adultes. Ses parents hébergèrent trois autres enfants chez eux jusqu’à la Libération : Charles Sajda, Françoise Tieck et Claude Salomon. En mai 1943, Rachel Szonek et son mari furent arrêtés et déportés. Leur fille aînée, Anne, dix-sept ans, fit appel à Madeleine, qui plaça la plus jeune, Nadia, un an et demi, avec Pierrette chez Maria Olivier. Après la guerre, M. et Mme Szonek ayant péri dans les camps de la mort, Anne fut nommée tutrice de son frère et de ses soeurs. Ce n’est qu’alors que Maria Olivier découvrit que les petites filles qu’elle avait recueillies étaient juives.
Le 24 novembre 1997, Yad Vashem a décerné à Madeleine Perret et à ses parents, Gustave et Lucienne Richard, le titre de Juste parmi les Nations.
