L'histoire
La famille Grumbacher, des Juifs Allemands, vit à Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire dans la Nièvre depuis 1939. Ils sont voisins avec la famille Rodolphi.
A l’automne 1942, la nièce des Rodolphi, Gabrielle Lescanne se trouve chez eux lorsque la famille Grumbacher se fait arrêter par des gendarmes.
Le fils ainé Rudolph Grumbacher, 19 ans, parvient à s’échapper et se réfugie chez ses voisins Rodolphi. Constatant la détresse du jeune homme et pleine de générosité,Gabrielle Lescanne lui propose de venir se cacher chez elle à Fourchambault (La Garenne).
Urbain et Gabrielle Lescanne accueillent le jeune Juif avec chaleur et dans le plus complet désintéressement malgré leur situation modeste.
Rudolph Grumbacher reste plus d’un an chez le couple Lescanne jusqu’en novembre1943.
A cette date, il réussit à passer en Suisse avec l’aide de Gabrielle Lescanne et de sa soeur Madame Chamouard.
Après guerre Rudolph Grumbacher s’installe à Bâle, en Suisse et se lie d’amitié avec le petit fils des Lescanne, Pierre.
le 9 décembre 1996, l’Institut Yad Vashem de Jérusalem a décerné le titre de Juste parmi les Nations à Monsieur Urbain Lescanne et son épouse Gabrielle.
