Simon et Hélène Goldschmidt vivaient à Paris avec leurs trois enfants, Jacques, Madeleine et Suzanne. Ces Juifs venus de Pologne n’avaient pas la nationalité française. Le 15 juillet 1942, Georges Labbé, un inspecteur de police dont le fils de quatorze ans était le camarade de Jacques, vint prévenir les Goldschmidt qu’une rafle était imminente. Il invita toute la famille à venir se réfugier chez lui. Comme il n’y avait pas assez de place, Simon Goldschmidt et la petite Madeleine, qui avait huit ans, furent envoyés chez les parents de Denise Labbé, M. et Mme Coquel, qui habitaient le même immeuble. Un mois plus tard, Simon Goldschmidt, craignant une dénonciation et ne voulant pas mettre plus longtemps en danger les gens qui l’avaient accueilli si généreusement, décida de se rendre en zone sud avec ses deux aînés, Suzanne et Jacques. Malheureusement, le passeur échoua dans sa tentative et les fugitifs furent arrêtés près de Tours. Déportés à Auschwitz, ils y furent assassinés. Hélène et Madeleine demeurèrent un certain temps chez les Coquel et les Labbé, puis on leur trouva un passeur sûr et elles réussirent à passer en zone sud. Elles y trouvèrent refuge jusqu’à la Libération.
Le 19 février 1992, Yad Vashem a décerné à Georges et Denise Labbé et à M. et Mme Coquel, le titre de Juste des Nations.
