L'histoire
Ernest Cayre et sa mère Charlotte habitaient La Châtre dans l’Indre. Conseiller municipal de la commune, il occupait un appartement situé au dessus de son magasin de mercerie. Au début de l’année 1942, sa soeur, Paule Dru (q.v.) qui habitait Paris, lui demanda de préparer l’appartement qu’elle possédait à La Châtre pour y accueillir des voisins juifs de Paris, les Chavel. Elle lui expliqua qu’elle avait l’intention d’héberger le couple et leur fils Michel, âgé de 12 ans, dans le logement où vivait alors sa mère. Les trois Chavel arrivèrent à La Châtre et s’installèrent donc, en compagnie de Charlotte Cayre, chez Paule Dru qui venait parfois avec son mari, passer quelques jours dans l’Indre. Les réfugiés juifs vécurent deux ans dans une sécurité relative. Puis, au mois de mai 1944, ils apprirent que les Allemands s’apprêtaient à arrêter tous les Juifs de la région. Maurice Chavel et son fils Michel prirent la fuite pour se cacher temporairement dans un village voisin. Ernest Cayre offrit l’hospitalité à Madame Chavel pendant plusieurs jours. C’était particulièrement dangereux pour lui, compte tenu des imminentes arrestations de Juifs prévues. Lorsque la vague d’arrestations prit fin, les Chavel rentrèrent au domicile des Dru où ils restèrent cachés jusqu’à la fin de l’Occupation. Ni Ernest Cayre, ni Charlotte, ni les Dru ne demandèrent jamais la moindre compensation pour leur action de sauvetage.
Le 5 mai 1991, Yad Vashem a décerné à Ernest Cayre et à sa mère Charlotte, le titre de Juste des Nations.
