L'histoire
Françoise et Geneviève de Menthon sauvèrent la vie de Rachel Rose-Marie Freidig, une jeune juive qu’elles cachèrent dans leur château de Menthon-St.Bernard (Haute-Savoie). Rachel était internée dans la section enfants du camp de Gurs. Une nuit, des membres d’une organisation clandestine pénétrèrent dans le camp dont ils firent sortir un groupe d’enfants juifs. Les sauveteurs et les enfants arrivèrent après plusieurs jours de marche à l’hôpital de Grenoble, qui était alors sous contrôle italien. Ensuite, divisés en quatre groupes, les enfants furent transférés vers d’autres cachettes. En mars 1944, Rachel Freidig fut confiée aux soeurs de Menthon. Elle passa environ deux mois au château, où elle reçut un accueil chaleureux et fut bien traitée. Peu avant le débarquement en Normandie, Rachel put gagner la Suisse, avec un groupe d’enfants qui furent ainsi sauvés. Il ressort d’un certain nombre d’autres témoignages que les deux soeurs de Menthon cachèrent également d’autres enfants juifs.
Le 8 janvier 1990, Yad Vashem a décerné à Françoise et Geneviève de Menthon le titre de Juste des Nations.
