L'histoire
Jean Lugan, artiste peintre et dessinateur, habitait dans le 14ème arrondissement de Paris avec sa femme Elisabeth. En 1936, M. Fresco, un libraire juif du 13ème arrondissement, lui proposa d’illustrer un ouvrage qu’il s’apprêtait à publier. Jean Lugan accepta. Les deux familles devinrent amies. En septembre 1942, la situation de ceux des Juifs de Paris qui avaient échappé aux grandes rafles de juillet devint critique. Les Fresco décidèrent de tenter de passer en zone sud avec leur fillette de deux ans, Anita. Les Juifs n’ayant pas le droit de franchir la ligne de démarcation, les Lugan donnèrent à leurs amis leur livret de famille. Grâce à celui-ci, les Fresco purent obtenir des cartes d’identité « d’aryens » qui leur permirent de passer sans encombre en zone sud. Les Lugan n’ayant pas d’enfants, la petite fut censée être leur nièce. Si la fraude avait été découverte, les Lugan risquaient de lourdes peines.
Le 12 juillet 1990, Yad Vashem a décerné à Elisabeth et Jean Lugan le titre de Juste parmi les Nations.
