Arthur Lévy habite à Strasbourg avant la deuxième guerre mondiale. Quand les Allemands envahissent la France, ils annexent l’Alsace à l’Allemagne et tous les Français de cette région, incluant les Juifs, sont expulsés.
Arthur Lévy est en relation professionnelle avec August et Suzanne Steinmetz. Une amitié naît entre les deux hommes. Arthur Lévy a été caché de novembre à décembre 1942 chez August et Suzanne Steinmetz à Strasbourg. Personne n’était au courant que le couple hébergeait et cachait un Juif. Les Steinmetz ont agi par charité, sans aucune compensation financière. Les risques encourus étaient grands car les Steinmetz auraient pu être emprisonnés avec l’homme qu’ils cachaient.
Les liens d’amitié ont perduré après la guerre entre Arthur Lévy et les Steinmetz.
Le 4 mars 1985, Yad Vashem – Institut International pour la Mémoire de la Shoah a décerné le titre de Juste parmi les Nations à Monsieur August Steinmetz et à son épouse Madame Suzanne Steinmetz.
