L'histoire
François Burtin et sa femme Francine vivaient à Saint Maur dans la banlieue de Paris. En 1943 ils donnèrent asile à deux Juifs qui s’étaient cachés chez leur nièce, Ellen Géraud (q.v.) et son mari Antoine à Sucy en Brie non loin de là. En été 1942, ce couple avait hébergé Hélène Oppenheim, dont le mari, un avocat allemand, avait été arrêté à Paris, ainsi que la petite Berthe Amsterdamer, sept ans, dont les parents, arrêtés, avaient été déportés et Julie Kugel, née en Autriche. Julie fut atteinte d’une pneumonie en 1943 et les Géraud se virent contraints de l’isoler et donc de trouver d’autres refuges pour les Juifs qu’ils avaient recueillis. Ils demandèrent à leur oncle, François Burtin, de leur venir en aide. François et Francine Burtin accueillirent volontiers Héléne Oppenheim et la petite Berthe, s’en occupant avec bonté et sans demander la moindre compensation. De plus, lorsqu’Ellen Géraud partait au travail le matin, son oncle François venait prendre soin de Julie Kugel jusqu’à son retour. Lorsque Julie fut rétablie, Berthe Amsterdamer et Hélène Oppenheim retournèrent chez les Géraud.
Le 28 janvier 1982, Yad Vashem a décerné à François et Francine Burtin le titre de Juste des Nations.
