En février 1944, Paul et Yvonne PICARD sont arrêtés dans leur appartement à Nice alors que leurs deux enfants, Michel (né en 1931) et Françoise (née en 1934) sont encore à l’école. Comme ils en avaient convenu d’avance, ils se rendent chez M. Charpentier (leur chef de troupe scout), qui les conduit chez le Pasteur GAGNIER.
Le 2 février 44, le Pasteur GAGNIER amène les enfants dans deux familles protestantes de Nice, les DURAND et les LONG. Fin mars 44, le danger grandissant, la famille où réside Michel demande à sa famille dans l’Isère si elle peut accueillir les deux enfants. Sur son accord, Philippe DURAND amène Michel chez Louis et Germaine LAURENCIN (couple sans enfant) et Françoise alla chez Napoléon et Joséphine BOUVIER (6 enfants). Les deux familles étaient des agriculteurs.
À partir de septembre 1944, une fois la région libérée, les enfants restèrent chez les LAURENCIN et les BOUVIER jusqu’à ce que des membres de leur famille puissent s’occuper d’eux.
Les deux enfants restèrent en relation avec leurs familles adoptives et les liens continuèrent avec leurs descendants.
Le 3 octobre 2012, l’Institut Yad Vashem de Jérusalem a décerné le titre de Justes parmi les Nations à Monsieur Philippe Durand et son épouse Marcelle.
