L'histoire
Marie Fenayrol était pharmacienne; veuve, elle vivait à Toulouse avec son fils Jean et sa fille Marie. Un jour, vers la fin de l’année 1942, une jeune juive allemande de 18 ans, Charlotte Hirsch, se présenta chez elle. La jeune fille avait été cachée sous un faux nom, ainsi que d’autres jeunes juives, au couvent de Pompignon près de Toulouse. Leur présence avait été dénoncée par une religieuse, elle-même juive convertie. La direction du couvent avait donc été contrainte de trouver des familles françaises disposées à héberger les réfugiées. Marie Fenayrol et ses enfants accueillirent chaleureusement Charlotte et s’en occupèrent avec dévouement. Sachant que l’adolescente était juive, ils l’aidèrent à observer les préceptes alimentaires. Par ailleurs, non contents de refuser tout paiement pour son entretien, ils donnèrent à Charlotte de l’argent de poche. La jeune fille aidait un peu aux tâches ménagères, mais les gros travaux étaient effectués par l’employée de maison. Lorsque son frère vint lui rendre visite, les Fenayrol l’hébergèrent pour la nuit, afin d’éviter qu’il ne soit arrêté par les agents de la Gestapo. Leur pharmacie fournissait aussi aux Juifs des médicaments introuvables ailleurs. Charlotte Hirsch vécut chez les Fenayrol jusqu’en mai 1945. Lorsqu’elle les quitta, Marie lui dit que les portes de leur maison lui seraient toujours ouvertes.
Le 9 octobre 1977, l’Institut Yad Vashem de Jérusalem a décerné à Marie Fenayrol et ses enfants Jean et Marie le titre de Juste parmi les Nations.
